Homocysteine (HCY)

Code

3090

Principle

Homocysteine (HCY) is a thiol-containing amino acid produced by the intracellular demethylation of methionine. Homocysteine values can assist in the diagnosis and treatment of patients suspected of having hyperhomocysteinemia and homocystinuria.

Preanalytical

1 mL Serum Refrigerated

Turn Around Time

1 day

Methodology

Chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA)

Limitations

The following drugs may elevate levels of homocysteine: methotrexate, carbamazepine, phenytoin, nitrous oxide, anticonvulsants and 6-azauridine triacetate.  Specimens from patients who have received preparations of mouse monoclonal antibodies for diagnosis or therapy may contain human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA). Specimens containing HAMA may produce anomalous values when tested.
